President Rodrigo Roa Duterte joins the 119th Anniversary Celebration of the Philippine Navy. The event was held at the Sasa Wharf in Davao City on May 31, 2017.
As part of the highlights of the Philippine Navy’s anniversary celebration, the President led the commissioning of the Barko ng Republika ng Pilipinas (BRP) Davao del Sur.
He also led the awarding of medals to the exemplary Philippine Navy personnel and units. The awardees include Colonel Hermaine Songano (Distinguished Conduct Star), Lt. Lemuel L. Rosete and Corporal Elmar De Jesus Jr. (Gold Cross Medals), the Philippine Fleet (Type Command of the Year for 2017), Naval Forces Eastern Mindanao Command (Naval Operating Forces of the Year 2017), and the Naval Education and Training Command (Naval Support Command of the Year 2017).
The President delivered his speech where he highlighted his promise to make the Armed Forces of the Philippines stronger by the end of his term. President Duterte also emphasized the need to eradicate the emergence of violence extremists in the country citing that he would rather talk peace with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) instead of terrorists.
President Duterte lauded the Philippine Navy for its contribution in maintaining the peace and security of the Philippines’ coastal areas. He then urged the Navy to continue its mandate as he vowed that he will continue to provide the Navy the necessary equipment to make them more effective in carrying out their duties.
He capped off his speech by saying that while the Philippine Navy keeps the shores and seas of the Philippines peaceful, he too will also continue to find a peaceful resolution in the sea dispute.
Following his speech, the President took a tour inside the newly-commissioned BRP Davao del Sur. PRESIDENTIAL PHOTO
